Our Family cont'd.

Our father bought the family farm in 1958 (320 acres) to raise a family, cattle & horses, and continued to have the animals long after the kids left home. However, in  2007, we took a break from having animals and came home to care for our Father who was ill.

In 2008, we started working on a new direction for our family farm - to build a retreat centre for seniors and offer a 'home away from home' - a mini vacation, with seniors attending social day programs with fun activities & overnight stays. This was a dream for our father & MJ (daughter, Mary-Jane), to be able to create a family legacy.

However in life, circumstances arise and lives change.  In 2010, our Father passed away from cancer, and we put Quiet Waters Retreat Centre on hold, to take a much needed rest.

In 2012, we got back on track with life, so MJ started raising alpacas & llamas with hopes of them eating more grass & cutting less.  Although they eat a lot of grass and leave no footprints, which is awesome, she still cuts the grass, however not as much.

Alpacas & Llamas are easy to look after & offer a stress-free lifestyle to humans, while their fiber provides yarn to make all types of clothing and their 'poo', is a great soil enhancer as well.

Then in 2014 we started pasturing horses for a neighbor.  They arrive in May & stay till first snow and return the following spring. While the horses are eating, having fun & relaxing, they also protect the alpacas & llamas from time to time, and are great company for family and visitors.

In July 2015, Juno, a black Labrador-cross rescue dog, came for a 3 week visit to see if he would like to live with us & never left.  Juno's an excellent guard dog who looks after all of us. The horses, alpacas, llamas, along with ALL the farm animals have become a large happy family.

Of course our large family doesn't end there. We have many wildlife visitors: such as deer, moose, cougar, coyotes, fox, black bear, skunks, Canadian geese and everything in between, who stop by for visits.

All Wildlife come for visits from time to time, as they know they will be safe at Quiet Waters Retreat Centre & QWRC Alpacas, since we have a NO HUNTING POLICY!

In 2022, we sold a few acres to take care of some much needed renos for both the animals & our home life. When living on a farm, there's always something to do or fix.
